Still Waters

I have always loved the water. I love being in the water and staying near the water. Whenever we are planning a vacation, water must not only be in my view, but I have to have access to it. It just brings me such peace and relaxation.

Today while quieting myself during a time of prayer and listening to God’s word being preached, I heard in my spirit the words still waters. Even the phrase alone brings such peace. When we see water that is still, it’s so calming, so inviting. The Lord knows just what to say to woo you to his presence.

Psalms 23 is one of the most familiar passages in the Bible. I remember learning this passage of scripture when I was about 7 years old. Although I’ve been able to recite it for years, this passage of scripture is one that brings such reassurance no matter how many times I’ve said it. If you haven’t read Psalms 23, please take the time and read it in its entirety.

Psalms 23 verse 2 says “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

In Hebrew, the phrase “still waters” literally means restful waters. I believe that the Holy Spirit whispered that to me to so that I can share with others that this is a time in which he wants to bring you to a place of rest. When you go inward, the Holy Spirit can give you rest for your weary soul. He can give rest to your mind and your thoughts that have been racing over the past few weeks. He wants to impress upon you his assurance that while you rest in Him, all is well. We see so much calamity as we watch the news, read articles, speak to love ones and friends, but God is saying “still waters.”  He wants us to come out of the storm and seek shelter in him and him alone. Let his love surround you and restore you.

A good shepherd doesn’t lead his flock to troubled waters. He knows that would stir up his sheep and cause fear. Instead, the Bible tells us that God leads us besides the still waters and he restores our soul. The holy spirit is so gentle with us. How he cares for us is simply amazing. Be lead by him and let him lead you to a place of stillness. Do not fret. Do not fear. The Lord is with us. He is our deliverer!
